She was seated beside Kurt, both of them squeezed into the small amount of space behind Archer’s desk, watching a screen so large it felt like they were chatting to his team through an open window despite the fact they were on separate ships.

She’d suggested she sit in his lap for this meeting, but she’d only been teasing. Even after spending most of their time naked and tangled up with each other, all it took was a touch and they’d be at it again. Definitely not something the rest of his team needed to see.

“Still nothing?” Kurt asked.

It was the first time she’d seen the rest of Team Three’s faces since before the gala. The only one missing was Dante. She assumed he was flying the ship, milking it for every bit of speed he could wring from her engines. The others all showed signs of fatigue and worry. She knew how they felt. They were all concerned, which was why they were having this meeting in real time instead of sticking to short, encrypted bursts that would be harder to detect.

Dax shook his head. “It’s like the whole area and every ship in it fell into a black hole. It’s been a full day now, and no one has been able to make contact. IAF ships from all over the sector are making best speed for the Drift, but they have no estimate of when they’ll get there. Colonel Bahl has sent Team Four to investigate. They’ll be there in fifty hours or so.”

“You’re closer. You could turn the Malora around…” Kurt started to say, but Dax cut him off with a gesture.

“Our orders are to hunt down Clooney and bring him back for interrogation.”

“And retrieve whatever Lange gave him,” Bobbi said. She needed to stay focused on the plan. Every time she stopped, she started worrying about her uncle and everyone back on Astek. Tianna and her husbands. Private Reddy, Irani, and the girl’s boisterous poly family. Bobbi couldn’t do anything to help them. Hell, she’d taken the Bat, leaving Scott without his emergency escape plan. A surge of guilt welled up, but she pushed it back down and forced herself to tune in to what was being said.

“Any luck figuring out what that might have been?” Eric asked from his spot at the table. “It doesn’t make sense that they’d do a physical handoff if it was just data. It had to be something tangible.”

“But small.” Bobbi sketched out the approximate size of the object with her hands.

“Bio-weapon sample, maybe?” Aria suggested.

“Possible,” Dax agreed.

“Or stolen tech,” Eric said.

“Also possible, but we’ve got no way to confirm any of these theories right now. The answers are back at Astek station, and we can’t talk to them.”

Kurt leaned forward and steepled his hands on the desk. “So, what are we here to talk about, sir?”

“Our orders.” Dax looked around the table and then directly at Kurt. “You’re not going to like them.”

“You know I hate it when you get dramatic, sir.
